Shopping for groceries can be an exciting undertaking. Some people love it, whilst others do it because they have to. While fruits and vegetables are an essential part of our daily diet, you need a few tips to help you save an extra cent. Here are some useful tips for buying fresh produce.

1. Understand seasons

Different types of vegetables are available in surplus at certain times of the year. Though some are imported during the off-season in the country, this does not mean they contain the same freshness. Learn to differentiate seasons so you can supplement during the off-season, instead of opting for produce that isn’t fresh.

2. Just because it is called fresh produce does not mean it is

Many people assume that because the grocery store has a fresh sign at the entrance, then the produce must be fresh. This is not usually the case. Always check how a fruit looks from every angle and also feel for the texture in certain vegetables. These qualities will help you differentiate fresh vegetables from those that aren’t.

3. Farmer’s market over supermarket

Even though the supermarket may appear more convenient (in any case, you are buying everything under one roof), consider taking a trip to the farmer’s market. Food in the farmer’s market is mostly fresher and sometimes directly from the garden. If you’re lucky, they may sometimes be cheaper too.

4. Don’t buy too early

The essence of buying fresh produce is eating it when it is still fresh. If you purchase fruits then store them in the fridge for a while before eating, they won’t be fresh when you eat them. This won’t be of any good for your health either. If you plan to use a vegetable for dinner, try to buy it either the exact day or the day before, so the freshness is still present during consumption as this is when they tend to be the healthiest.
